To help tackle this, Waitrose is donating £100,000 of fresh produce to the charity FareShare. “Last year, a quarter of children aged seven to 17 reported experiences of food poverty over the summer holidays, ranging frombeing hungry but not eating to eating at friends’ houses because there wasn’t enough food at home,” says Shona Goudie of The Food Foundation. Without schools providing lunch and structure to children’s days, a growing number of vulnerable families will struggle to cover the costs of meals and childcare over the long break. The Food Foundation, a charity and think tank, reports that four million children now live in households facing food poverty, a number which has doubled over the past year, while it impacts more than ninemillion adults. But for some, already facing overstretched budgets, the outlook is less sunny.
